Old Jaffa, Tel Aviv

When coming to Israel it is easy to associate Tel Aviv with the beach, and that’s it. Jaffa sits in the southern part of the city and is the oldest part of Tel Aviv, including an ancient port. While most know of Jaffa because of its association with biblical stories Jonah, Solomon, and Saint Peter, this part of the city has so much to offer. Old Jaffa is a must see on any private tour in Israel or a family trip to Israel.

Private tours in Israel

As soon as you step into Jaffa you feel like you have left the city and entered a new one. Jaffa has a unique, old world atmosphere that completely contrasts the rest of Tel Aviv. For the full affect it is best to visit Jaffa during the day as well as evening time. Whether you are on a private tour in Israel or walking around without a guide, you will love getting lost in Jaffa’s alleyways filled with art galleries, churches, the flea market and historic stone buildings

The ancient Jaffa Port is still an active fishing port, and during the day it is quite a site to walk along the port and see all the fishermen and the beautiful boats parked there. If you are visiting at night it is nice to sit at one of the restaurants on the water. Moving inward is the famous Jaffa Watchtower, a Tel Aviv icon. The watchtower was built in 1906 in honor of the Turkish Sultan Al-Hamid’s 25th year in power. Another iconic spot in Jaffa is the Wishing Bridge. According to a local legend the bridge is built on top of an old wishing well, and if you hold onto your zodiac sign and make a wish it is supposed to come true. I guess there is only one way to find out!

Another main attraction is Shuk Hapishpishim, the outdoor flea market. During daylight one can shop around for new or second-hand goods. Everything ranges from small trinkets to clothing and furniture. This has become the go to place to buy gifts and other souvenirs! At night time the flea market turns into quite a trendy nightlife scene. Live music on the streets, bars, and restaurants are constantly packed with locals and tourists.
